The following images describe 2 bodies of work. The first being sculptural representations of the human form. They are idealized images which are grounded in an investigation of traditional anatomy, proportion, and Classical Greek and Italian Renaissance sculpture. In many cases, these images exist as fragments of the whole. This stategy draws on the spirit of ancient works. Fragments anticipate the whole and long for completion. Fragments serve as metaphor of the human condition as we search to fulfill who we are. The second body of work is inspired by memories of growing up in Hawaii. The visual language of these works are influenced by the rich culture and environment of the Hawaiian Islands. A large portion of this work is dedicated to the description of water. The islands are surrounded by a cloak of blue and green ocean waters; it is both serenely calm and unpredictably powerful; it is the soul of my memories. ![]() WAVES INSTALLATION A recent exhibit where plaster tiles create 2 fields of water on the gallery floor. 3 pedestals present cast iron tiles also referencing the surface of the ocean. Accompanying the tiles are 3 cloud forms sewn from parachute material. ![]() WAVES INSTALLATION Wake field and cloud forms ![]() WAVES INSTALLATION Detail of iron tiles on pedastal ![]() WAVES INSTALLATION Detail of wake pattern created by plaster tiles ![]() WAVES INSTALLATION ![]() IRON STUDY cast iron 17" x 8" x 4" 2006 A figurative fragment of the female torso soon to be developed into a complete figure. ![]() IRON STUDY side view ![]() IRON STUDY reverse view ![]() IRON ARM STUDY cast iron 10" X 12" X 12" 2006 Arm fragments made to be attached to the torso study mentioned above. ![]() RIGHT ARM STUDY ![]() LEFT ARM STUDY ![]() OCEAN TILE PATTERNS laminated plywood 18" x 18" x 2" (each tile) 2005 3 tiles to be molded, cast, and reproduced to create a field which mimics the surface of the ocean Each tile is carved from laminated plywood OCEAN TILE PATTERNS3/4 view ![]() PHOENIX cast bronze 14” x 4” x 4” 1991 The mythological bird which burns in the fire and is born again out of its own ashes. As one approaches this work, the subtle contours of radiating rings begin to appear. This is especially the case in low light conditions such as sunrise. As the sun climbs high in the sky, the contoured rings begin to evaporate. They re-emerge with the light of the setting sun. ![]() MEDITATION detail ![]() MEDITATION detail ![]() FIELD cast bronze tiles 2.5" x 2.5" x .25" (each individual tile) 2006 Inspired by the vast open ocean of the Pacific. My brother told a story about my father and his love of kites and stamps during his funeral. The story brought back powerful memories and emotions for me. The kite which hangs in this structure is a metaphor for the soul. The altar displays airmail stamps collected by my father, my brother, and myself. ![]() HOMAGE TO MY FATHER detail ![]() HOMAGE TO MY FATHER detail ![]() MODEL OF LOVE cast bronze, foam, oak 30" x 14" x 4" Inspired by childhood memories of 3-dimensional forms: WW II P-51 Mustang model airplane and a minature replica of the Venus de Milo.
