ARTIST STATEMENT

My experience as an artist and educator allows me to explore 2 distinct influences within my work.

THE FIGURE
The classical figurative tradition serves as my platform to investigate the human form and the immortal spirit captured in flesh. The complexity of its structure, the subtleties of its surfaces, and the power of internal forces, combine to challenge my skills as an artist. Are we not moved by a languid arm, a throat exposed, muscles rippling under the surface of skin, blood coursing through veins, a bead of sweat rolling? I wish to capture these forms and reveal their inner poetry.

HOME
We all long for home. Hawaii is my home. Over the past several years, my imagery has adopted influences outside of the figurative tradition. The cultural traditions and environment of my youth speak their voice through this work. This body of work, much less descriptive, is far richer in metaphor. My palette for the figure is an acquired taste, haute cuisine, nurtured by the academy. My hunger for home is deeply rooted in my being, a local plate lunch, intuitive and natural.

For now, I am willing to ride both of these waves. Each ride feeds my life as an artist. One day, these waves will mesh and join forces.

When that day comes….
